The purpose of the conference was to look at what changing status, norms, and jurisprudence surrounding Métis in Canada mean for corporate–Aboriginal relations as well as to examine how discourse, the law, and policy are evolving with respect to Indigenous rights and title. It also sought to identify actionable ways to support Indigenous rights while encouraging responsible development and investment in Canada.

President Chartier’s remarks to the Council on progress being achieved on Métis Nation rights recognition and economic development are attached. In question period, he also addressed the issue of the proliferation of groups emerging in eastern Canada and claiming Métis identity and rights. He referenced the work of Professor Darryl Leroux from Saint Mary’s University in Halifax who has chronicled the origins and evolution of these “self-made Métis” groups. Professor Leroux’s recent interview on APTN on this subject is also attached.
