A highlight of the Back to Batoche celebration during the third week of July was the signing of a Framework Agreement for Advancing Reconciliation by Minister of Crown-Indigenous Relations Carolyn Bennett and MNS President Glen McCallum on July 20, 2018. The Agreement establishes a negotiation process to develop a renewed nation-to-nation and government-to-government relationship between Canada and the MNS. Tom Isaac, the former Ministerial Special Representative on Métis Section 35 rights, will serve as chief negotiator for the MNS.
“Today we are celebrating a key step to strengthen our government-to-government relationship with Métis Nation-Saskatchewan”, said Minister Bennett. “With this framework in place, we are set to move ahead together to find shared solutions that will help close socio-economic gaps and advance our journey toward reconciliation for everyone’s benefit.”
MNS President McCallum stated: “The framework provides meaningful recognition that Métis people in Saskatchewan have been a part of this land and have contributed to the development of Canada over the past 150 years. This is a historic day and from this framework, we can move forward together to address the issues that affect Métis people and Canada: specifically to advance outstanding Métis claims, support for our government and ensuring our people are supported properly.”
During July, the MNS also concluded Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Provincial bodies to move ahead on health and education. An MOU with the Saskatchewan Health Authority commits the parties to identify common priorities and maximize mutually beneficial opportunities to work together in order to improve the health status of Métis people through diverse but targeted initiatives. An MOU with the Saskatchewan School Boards Association commits the parties to work together toward the Métis participating fully in all aspects of the education system as students, teachers, Elders, Board members and decision makers.
